Why overheating is the emergency it looks like
A cooling system is closed, so as AAA puts it, if you are low on coolant, you have a leak somewhere in the system. Coolant does not get used up; it escapes, and whatever let it escape, a hose, the radiator, the water pump, a cap, will keep doing it.
The stakes are the engine itself. Sustained overheating warps cylinder heads and finishes head gaskets, which turns a hose clamp's worth of problem into major engine work. If the temperature gauge climbs, pull over, shut it down, and never open a hot radiator cap.
We pressure-test the system to find the actual leak, confirm the thermostat and water pump are doing their jobs, and put the fix in writing before any work begins.
Freeze protection is the other half of the job
In the Yampa Valley the cooling system works both shifts: it sheds heat on long summer climbs and it keeps the engine block from freezing through the coldest nights of the year. Coolant that has weakened with age can fail at either job.
