The Sierra HD and the Duramax
Most of the GMC work that comes through our doors is diesel. The Duramax and the Allison transmission behind it are why ranchers and contractors buy a Sierra HD, and they are also where the expensive problems live: injectors, the high-pressure fuel pump, turbos, and the EGR and DPF emissions hardware on later trucks. We work on every generation from the LB7 through the current L5P.
A lot of modern Duramax trouble starts with how the truck is used. Short trips and long idling in cold weather keep the exhaust from getting hot enough to burn soot out of the particulate filter, which shows up as frequent regens, warning lights and reduced power. Gas Sierras, Yukons and the 6.2L recall
Not every GMC is a diesel. Half-ton Sierras, Yukons and Canyons run gas V8s, V6s, turbo fours, and in some years the 3.0L Duramax inline six. They get the same factory-schedule maintenance and the same diagnosis as the heavy trucks, and Acadia and Terrain crossovers are serviced alongside them.
One thing to check first: NHTSA recall 25V-274 covers certain 2021 to 2024 Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL models with the 6.2L V8 gas engine, for connecting rod and crankshaft defects that can cause engine failure. Recall repairs are free at a GMC dealer, so run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. For everything else, federal law says your warranty cannot be denied just because an independent shop did the work.
