Tacomas, Tundras and 4Runners that work
Most Toyota trucks and 4Runners use part-time four-wheel drive: a transfer case locks the front and rear axles together when you shift into 4WD. That is what gets you up a muddy two-track, and it is also why 4WD belongs on snow, mud and gravel, not dry pavement, where the binding strains the driveline. Transfer case and differential fluids do the hardest work here and are the easiest to forget, so we check them every visit.
Age is the other thing to know. Older V6 and V8 Toyota engines, such as the 3.4L V6 and 4.7L V8 found in many earlier Tacomas, 4Runners and Tundras, use a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule, while most newer Toyota engines use a timing chain. If you bought a high-mileage Toyota and do not know its history, the timing belt is the first thing to confirm.
The Tundra engine recall, and when the dealer is the right call
Toyota's twin-turbo V35A V6 in the newer Tundra has two recalls worth checking. NHTSA campaign 24V-381 covers certain 2022 and 2023 Tundras whose engines may contain manufacturing debris that can cause the main bearings to fail, with the engine replaced free at a dealer. A later campaign, 25V-767, adds certain 2022 to 2024 Tundras for inspection. If you own one, run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup first.
