All-wheel drive and why tires matter so much
Subaru's all-wheel drive is engaged all the time, sending power to all four wheels without the driver doing anything. That is what makes it good on snow, and it is also why it is fussy about tires. The system expects all four tires to turn at very nearly the same speed, so a mismatched tire, or one new tire beside three worn ones, makes the drivetrain work against itself every mile.
Subaru's own guidance is to replace tires with the same tires the car came with, or the same size and style if you change brands. Boxer engines, head gaskets and the CVT
Head gaskets are the Subaru repair everyone has heard about, and it is mostly an older-engine story: the 2.5L boxer engines in many earlier Outbacks, Foresters and Imprezas were known for external head gasket leaks. Signs are an oil or coolant seep at the cylinder heads, a sweet coolant smell, or a temperature gauge that creeps on long climbs. We pressure-test the cooling system and inspect the gasket area before recommending the job, because a leaking hose can look similar.
Most Subarus from the last decade and more use a CVT instead of a conventional automatic. It needs the correct fluid and, if it shudders, hesitates or whines, a proper diagnosis rather than a guess.
